Many thanks to Bob & BAR...yes, the jumper setup to C S solved the issue.
However, I have a related question about where does one learn (except through
encountering these problems and visiting newsgroups!) basics of computer
construction and settings such as this? I'm no expert but I'm also fairly
adept at electronics and a reasonably quick learner. Before today, I had no
idea about jumpers on the cd drive and still don't really understand why they
are there and what the options for the jumpers might entail or why one
setting is chosen over another. Any advice on where to learn this stuff?
(ie: Books or online resources perhaps)
Anyway, thanks again for advice to solve this.
