Question about CD disk size showing

I'm using XP's burn program to transfer data for permanent storage onto
TDK 12x 700meg CDRW's. Everything's working fine, but I have a question.
If I select all the files and folders that are on the disk and right
click properties, I'm showing 597megs of data. Now, if I go to a blank
space on the screen and right click properties for the disk there, I get
the blue and pink pie and that is showing me only 1.67megs used and the
rest free space.
Can someone tell me please how to interpret these two conflicting pieces
of information, and why they are different? Which one is telling me what
I need to know...that being how much space I have left on the disk
before it's full. I'm assuming it's the selected files amount but I
can't figure out what the lower figure means if it's not the accurate
figure.
Also, this data I have is mixed. There are a few folders with drivers
and programs in them, and the rest of the data are individual files of
various types. I haven't put these files in individual folders. Should I
be doing that to save space on the disk, and is this perhaps the reason
for the two different figures showing for space used?
Many thanks.
Dudley
