Case, power supply, and motherboard were designed as a set,and with a
Celeron in mind. It's going to be difficult to find a motherboard that will
mount properly, then when you do, you'd find that the power supply is vastly
underpowered. And if you cross that hurdle you might find that the case is
going to have overheating problems with a P4 and better video card. Not to
mention that low profile cards can be hard to find.
Here's another thing to consider: if XP came with that computer, it's going
to choke and die when it encounters a non-gateway motherboard, and you'll be
buying that, too.
You're really better off keeping that gateway for as long as it lasts,
as-is, and buy or build another computer to your specs. You can find plenty
of smaller case styles that will accommodate an off-the-shelf motherboard as
long as you get the right one.
