Might your MBD require chipset drivers?

Hi.
My sytem is a P3 800 w 128m RAM. both the CD-R/RW & DVD-+R/RW drives are LG.
I have my HDs in drawers so I can easily switch between OS'es. One HD is Windows 2000
Pro SP2 and the other is Windows XP Pro.
I have no problems with W2K but Win XP Pro keeps wanting to re-install the drivers
for both CD drives. It also comes up with an error for each: "Driver install failed.
System error of unknown. Possibly corrupt registry entry."
Now, this XP install is fresh, with out any odd software or such. Sometimes the CD drive
or the DVD will show up if the appropriate disk is inserted. Other times I have to reboot
and go through the same trouble again. I even re-installed win XP Pro again, with the same
problem.
I also recall that during the install there was an error that said something like:"Failed to install
SYSTEM" But the install completes successfully. And I can not find the Item "SYSTEM"
with possibly a ! on it anywhere.
The HD is new. So it can't be that. In fact other then the CD drive problem Win XP Pro
works fine. I am at a loss.
I have contacted LG for new driver but they insist that Win XP Pro has all I need, even though
the built in drivers don't work. I don't know why they don't provide separate drivers for this sort
of problem?
All help appreciated.
