Help!

I recently bought a new computer and it came loaded with all these programs.
I am new to the computer world and I'm trying to figure out how to get some
of these 50 short cut icons off my desk top as well as having some of the
programs unistalled. My start up is somewhat slow for a new computer and I
am assuming that it's because of all the programs they loaded prior to me
receiving the computer. Can someone possibly help me?
