adding ram made my comp crash

i just bought a new compaq sr1012nx comp and then purchased some memory from
online and when i tryed to use the comp it would crash, then i took out the
ram and my comp works again. i would like to know if i need to have the same
2 sticks of memory or can they be a different brand. both the sticks were
256mb pc2700 but from different manufacturers, did i get bad ram or was it
just not compatible with my comp.
