I suspect your speed issue may be related to one I had with transferring
files from my digital camera. Why did it take 100% of the CPU just to copy
files to the hard drive? I thought it was just USB being designed poorly, or
a driver problem, but when I moved to a newer computer with SATA the problem
went away completely. Serial ATA, unlike IDE, uses virtually no CPU for hard
drive operations. For this reason (and a few others) you may want to switch
to SATA if you have the option, and definitely look for it as a feature next
time you buy a new computer.
