I'm going to toss out a suggestion:
IDE 1 Master - OS Hard Drive
IDE 1 Slave - WD Hard Drive
IDE 2 Master - DVDRW
IDE 2 Slave - DVD ROM
I would check and see if your motherboard supports RAID configuration
since that will net you the performance increase and leave everything
else unaffected. You can often run into problems with having a HD as a
slave to a DVD Burner such as the HD getting stuck in DMA Mode 2 ;)
Even without RAID, it would still be advisable to put the Hard Drives on
the Primary (IDE 1) Controller.
