Two thoughts. First, try updating the chipset drivers for your
motherboard as they control your USB Controller. Second, try removing
their entries from the registry and from Device Manager. For device
manager, click Start-Run-Type devmgmt.msc and click OK. For the
registry, open Regedit and navigate to
HKLM-System-CurrentControlSet-Enum-USB and remove the folders labeled
Vid_Xxxx that contain your troubled devices under them. Do this after
removing the hardware from Device Manager. Hopefully this works for
you. It is possible that the problem is a physical hardware problem in
which case, they should be able to repair this for you if it is still
under warrenty.

Personally, I would make them fix it if you have already taken it in a
couple of times and they haven't fixed the problem.

The machine was sent back to IBM twice only to have the the operating system reinstalled and all my applications deleted. Dealer did it once. The dealer tried the JumpDrive on other ThinkPads in his shop when the R40 was returned (OS but no applications installed). It worked fine on 3 other Think Pads. The devices are a Lexar 512 JumpDrive, Logitec optical mouse, HP scanner, Epson printer. I can do hot swaps with the hardware on other machines but not my new R40.
