Well let's start from the beginning ... first uninstall as per
http://www.coribright.com/Windows/Article%20One.htm

If you miss out on Step 4, all you end up doing is reinstalling the older
drivers, so you must get them out of XP's mind! If you've installed more
than once, you may find several sets that you need to highlight and remove.

Now after Step 5... the new drivers are at HP's website at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?product=305364&lang=en&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&os=228

Install the software. Do NOT connect the printer to the PC until the
software tells you to do so.

How is it working after this?

the people at HP for about a week. I downloaded their latest drivers,
uninstalled, re-installed, etc., etc. but to no avail. My operating system
(Windows XP Home) has been maintained religiously. It absolutely amazes me
to go to the websites of manufacturers and check out the large number of
problems people have in installing hardware, etc!
