Transfer of Old HD to New Computer

Long story short. I tried to install my old hard drive
into a new computer. On first boot windows(xp) said i
need to reactivate as there was new hardware detected. I
selected the YES option. Windows froze. I rebooted and
now i get a hard disk failure. (Windows not recognizing
my HD) Looking for options on how to handle this. I have
very important files on old HD. Help! Thanks
