Hi, Darrell.
Is your computer now booting (or attempting) from SATA? For secondary HDs,
controller drivers can be installed in the "normal" way, but if SATA is to
be used for the boot device, then the drivers have to be integrated into
WinXP during Setup. This was a frequent problem in the early days of Win2K
because a wave of new HDs and controllers came to market right after Win2K
debuted and drivers for them were not on the Win2K CD-ROM; they had to be
added from a floppy diskette during Setup. Many more drivers are on the
WinXP CD-ROM and we've not had to add them from floppies when installing
WinXP - until SATA came along.
I haven't actually used either RAID or SATA (the HighPoint RAID connectors
on my motherboard are being used only as non-RAID ATA-133 channels while I
normally boot from a SCSI drive), but I suspect that the old procedure is
still required for WinXP to be able to boot from SATA. If not, you can
ignore the rest of this post. ;^}
With the SATA drivers at hand on a floppy, boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and
run Setup. When the line of white-on-black bars appears onscreen, you
should see a bottom line that says to press F6 if you need to install
third-party drivers. Press F6 quickly; the message won't stay there long.
Setup will continue for a long time, then it will stop with instructions
telling how to use that floppy to install the drivers. After this, Setup
should complete the installation.
Since this is not a new installation of WinXP, you probably have lots of
applications and data on your HD. To preserve these, use Microsoft's
instructions for an "in-place upgrade" (KB Article 315341), and be sure to
visit Windows Update as soon as you have your firewall and antivirus back in
place.
Of course, you probably need to be sure SATA is properly activated in your
BIOS, too.
