Poor XP Sound

Clean install of xp pro onto existing system had no problems with win98
Sound can now be jumping this seems to happen as the machine accesses the harddrive for infomation
using gigabyte motherboard and IDE ATA133 drives with promise drivers.
The fault can effect any sound startup, games playing cds etc
Anybody else had this problem
