International Phone Calls via the Internet

This may not be the appropriate group, so apologies in
advance.
I want to make telephone calls from the UK to Canada using
the internet to save on the cost of the call. I have
broadband and XP home edition, my daughter is working in a
Canadian hospital and only has access to a normal landline
phone.

Is this possible? I have not been able to find any
relevant information, so a guide as to the correct area to
look in and the terminology involved would be great.
