These I take it made using the 'Direct CD' component (drag and drop
'like a big floppy')

The inbuilt abilities of XP will read some of those - but not all
variants. Try Roxio/Adaptec's UDF Volume Reader program - go to
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv4.jhtml
and it is at the bottom of the page
