How about switching to "HTML Off"? Your posts are bloated to four times
their actual size with reams of unreadable unnecessary gunk, as you can
see below.
...disaster recovery 1st essential priority, is a full hard disk
back up of the troubled computer ! ...indeed, after that full
backup for safekeeping, I have been copying selected folders from
the Laptop hd, to a data storage 500gb hard disk in my main PC,
and from there I've been burning them to DVD :-) So, on my 500gb
drive E:\ I have a directory containing a Norton Ghost 14.0
backup of the entire Laptop 60gb hard disk. ...and also a folder
containing the directories that need to be salvaged. And for
speed, I've been using Norton Ghost to extract selected
directories from the Norton backup of the Laptop 60gb hd, and
saving them to that different directory on my main PC's internal
data-stoarage only 500gb drive E:\
...so one pretty much knows what one is doing regarding preserving
data !
The Laptop with problems will not boot up due to hardware problems
other than the hard disk itself. i.e. the hard disk is healthy,
and its' Vista installation is healthy. The Laptop hard disk is
plugged into a docking station and is being accessed as a slave
drive.
The problem with all this is that the Sage Accounts application
sotware that is installed on the Laptop Vista hd, is obvously not
"running," and so one cannot use the "backup" procedure within the
Sage software - out to a pen-drive - so that it can be
transported to the Laptop owners accountant's office Sage software
! So I've gathered up all the Sage directories and burnt them to
DVD, and the accountants office / in conjunction with Sage
software office, will have to do some manual tweaking, to get the
Sage software backup they're after !

For an easy way to change permissions en masse
on an NTFS drive, see here:

It's a civilized version of what Microsoft recommends
doing through 2 tedious command-line programs. The
link John Wunderlich posted is basically the same thing
done through Explorer, if one only needs to change 1 or
2 items. In all cases the method is the same: Running
as Admin. one "takes ownership" of an item, then
edits permissions. (An admin. has power to take ownership,
which confers power to change permissions, but an admin.
does not have power to change permissions per se. Sounds
ridiculous, I know, but that's how it works.)
I don't really understand the task. A plugged-in Vista OS
is imaged to E drive and then part of it is copied to E drive?
It doesn't seem to make sense, but maybe I misunderstood.
If it were me, before going any further, I'd make sure both
disks are mainly FAT32 data partitions, in order to avoid the
permissions problems. There's no reason for XP to be more
than about 5-10 GB, and no reason for Vista/7 to be more
than about 30-40 GB... that is, there's no reason to risk losing
data just because the OS is lost through malware or some
such. The data shouldn't be on C drive in the first place.
