Re: Network Problem with Jack and Jill

It is possible to draw some conclusions from your test results:
- Jack's IP address is 192.168.1.3
- Jill's address is 192.168.1.7
- Both addresses could change since the PCs use DHCP.
- The default gateway (probably your modem) is 192.168.1.1
- Since Jill can ping Jack, the network adapters and cables are probably OK.
- The most likely cause for Jack being unable to ping Jill is a firewall problem.
I recommend that you temporarily disable the Windows firewall on both PCs and also any other firewall you might have (e.g. ZoneAlarm a firewall included with your virus scanner). If you use a dial-up modem rather than an ADSL or Cable Modem then you must physically disconnect the modem from the Internet during the tests.
If Jack is still unable to ping Jill then you should reboot both machines into "Safe Mode with Networking" and try again.
You should also try and ping the following addresses from both machines:
- 192.168.1.1
- 192.168.1.3
- 192.168.1.7
Make sure that 1.3 and 1.7 is still the current address for Jack'n'Jill.

Here it is. I note that Jack pinging Jill can't find Jill.
