Re: RDP challenge after changing "main" profile's password, can't access any longer with RDP in XP SP2

My issue is not with the Remote Desktop program.... (I don't think)

I am asking about the Windows XP Pro on the computers I am trying to
sign on to USING the Remote Desktop Program.

I remotely connected to the computer using Remote Desktop Program,
signed on to the "Main" profile of the staff computer, went to the
User Accounts and changed the password.
It turns out that that didn't work as the staff could not sign on
using the new password when they came in to work the following
morning. So I used the Remote Desktop Program again from home via a
VPN connection (as usual) and I couldn't sign onto the "main" profile
either with the new password. So, I signed on remotely to the
"Tech" profile on the staff computers and once again going to the
User Accounts changed the password on the "Main" profile for them, and
THEN they could sign on directly while sitting there in front of their
machines.

However, Now I can't sign on to the "main" profile with the new
password using the Remote Desktop Program. This is not a special
Desktop program, it's the one built in to XP Pro.

I can still signon to all staff computers using the "tech" profile on
each of those comptuers.

I did delete the .rdp files on my home computer, but it had no affect.

In order to sign on, I open up the Remote Desktop Program, insert the
IP address for the computer I wish to access, type the username, type
the password and click OK. It worked perfectly until I changed the
passwords on the workstations via the Remote Desktop Program....

so I'm thinking there must be a reason it's not working because of how
I did it... I did get the warnning about all the encryption being
lost if I changed the password from the other profile, which was fine
with me as I don't think anything was encrypted.... all seems to be
working well for the staff members now.... only trouble is "I" can't
access the computers via the Remote Desktop Program now.....

My question is, how do I get it working again?

thanks,
niteowl

I'm running XP Pro SP2 on all administrative desktops computers at my
school. Our main password was compromised and I used RDP to access
all the administrative computers from home and changed the password on
the "Main" profile after hours.

When the staff came in the next day, they could not log on with the
new password. I could not log on from home using the new password.

I accessed the computer remotely via the "Tech" profile and changed
the password on the "main" profile and then the staff could sign in
using the new password. All was well. (I thought)

However, I tried accessing the computers from home just now and it
will not let me connect using the new password. I can still access
the "Tech" profile.

How do I get the new password to work from home AND for the user
sitting in front of the computer???

The RDP client in Windows XP (the topic of this newsgroup) doesn't have
"profiles". You specify a computer (hostname) and username (and can
optionally save the setup in an .rdp file for later reuse).

Perhaps the RDP client for a server version of Windows has more features,
like the "profiles" you mention, but then you need to ask in a newsgroup
that discusses server versions of Windows. None of the XP versions of
Windows are server-class versions of Windows.

Perhaps the saved settings in the .rdp file is what you meant by "profile";
however, each .rdp file has saved settings for a particular host, not a
generic profile that is used across all remote host connections. If you
look at the General tab, there is no place to enter the password to let you
update the saved settings in an .rdp file. As I recall, once you make a
connection, you can saved the settings into a .rdp file and the password can
be included. But that doesn't let you change the password later. You will
have to delete that .rdp file, setup the hostname, username, and settings
how you want for a particular host, make a connection, enter the password
and enable the "Remember my password" option, and then save those settings
(with the password) to create a new .rdp file.

You can establish a default.rdp saved settings file. When you change
options in the RDP client, the default.rdp gets update and becomes your
default settings. Maybe that's what you meant by a main "profile".
However, connection-specific settings, like login credentials, are not
retained in the default setup. Are you just loading the RDP client and
trying to use its default settings (which means you have to specify the host
or select from the MRU drop-down list along with entering the login
credentials), or are you opening an .rdp file (by double-clicking that .rdp
file, using a shortcut to it, or using the Open button in the RDP client) to
load the saved settings, including login credentials, for a *particular*
host?

Policies can override the saved password within an .rdp saved settings file.
That means you might save a password (only after you connect which then
prompts for it) into an .rdp file but you may still get prompted on the
connect request for a password if a policy override is in place.
