Found some Wordpad entiries on XP disc supplied....Couldn't run them..there
were 4 entries.
I could open them in Notebook but they were not readable..just seemed so
much gibberish..code ?
I copied them into a folder on my PC.
This appeared to be a BIG mistake...........because although I did not try
to run them I then found I could not go to my email.... Fortunately found
that OE was no longer listed as my choice of email source.......Gawd knows
how but this had been blanked out when I looked at the properties..I tried a
system reinstall point but it told me nothing had changed !

Good news was that by reinstating OE in the correct box via properties and I
was able to return to my email provider via the program.

Whew..........maybe I will just do without Wordpad !!

Dell does if you ask.
The security patch below should put it back.

Recently I have received some .DOC files from a relative which I can
only open by transferring them to my desktop and changing the access to
Word. On the other hand my wife can just click an them and they open in
Wordpad. I thought I had this on my PC but cannot find it.I am sure it
was there when I had the PC!  I have Notepad, but this produces a file
with all the code included. This makes it unusable and not suitable to
print.
TIA

Why don't you just search your disk for wordpad.exe and see if it is
on your system or not.

It is a Windows Protected File, so even if you accidentally deleted
wordpad.exe, it should be replaced.

It sounds like you may have just deleted the shortcut from
Accessories, which is easy to add back after you can find
wordpad.exe.  Locating a single file on a system should not be
difficult using the Windows search tools.

It is usually here:

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\

If it is not there search the entire HDD for it, replace the shortcut
in Accessories.

Well if Wordpad is a Windows protected file, would running 'SFC
/scannow' in a command window fix this problem?

If wordpad.exe is deleted and not replaced, WFP is broken.

When WFP is working properly and using wordpad.exe as an example of a
protected file that somehow gets deleted, I deleted wordpad.exe and
WFP quickly and silently replaced it with this event in the Event Log:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Windows File Protection
Event Category: None
Event ID: 64002
Description:
File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\program
files\windows nt\accessories\wordpad.exe. This file was restored to
the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of
the system file is 5.1.2600.5584.

I don't count on sfc /scannow and never even suggest it, but it is
often a first suggestion as a shot in the dark when some problem is
not understood. If WFP is working properly, sfc /scannow should find
nothing to do. If it does, something else is wrong. I personally
have never used it to fix any problem and will never even suggest it.

When sfc /scannow is suggested, the next message will invariably be -
it asks me for a CD and I don't have one, it didn't do anything or I
still have the same problem.

After that will come "Try running sfc /scannow in Safe Mode", but sfc /
scannow will not run in Safe Mode.

It is a good time consumer though.
