With memtest86+, test 5 is the most sensitive. And
two passes may be enough, as for things like load
sensitive faults, memtest86+ might not catch them. I
find memtest86+ is good for "stuck" faults, such as
a bad bit in memory, or a bad chip.
Another test, which is a combined memory and CPU test case,
is Prime95 torture test. It does a math calculation
with a known answer. It also uses a lot of RAM while
doing so. And that gives the ability to do additional
testing, in a manner more stressful than memtest86+.
So both programs have their uses, memtest86+ because
it comes as close as possible to testing all the memory,
and Prime95 stress test covers less of the memory, but
does so with more stress.

You don't have to "Join GIMPs" when using Prime95, and
can use it just for stress testing. An execution thread
will stop when the first error is detected. I want
to see a four hour run without errors, before assuming
all is well. On a laptop, you'll want to remain on AC
while doing the test. And elevate the laptop, so the cooling
system can work at full efficiency.
