Alternatively, you can get a wireless router and wireless NICs for the
computers. That will probably cost a little more, and you may not get
a good signal between the two floors.
In my experience going through walls, brick, stone, etc. isn't much of a
problem. Most WiFi problems are do to other radio sources like cordless
phones, microwaves, other WiFi, etc. And if somebody can drive by your
house or you have neighbors within a few thousand feet, you probably
want to use secured WiFi.
