Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure, courtesy of MS MVP Carey Frisch:
1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062
2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".
3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post: http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/genuinewindowsxp/threads/
4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an appropriate solution.
Tip: Use another computer to download WGA Diagnostic Tool and to post in the forum.

Hi there,
I have been locked out of my laptop which has been running the same
operating system (windows XP home) for over two years now. Everything
was fine until I downloaded "Bullguard Internet Security". It was
recommended by Microsoft and since the trial period was 60 days I
thought I'd give it a try and scan my computer for anything unwanted.
After the scan completed I was told that some malicious files had been
found and that they had been removed. The next pop-up box informed me
that due to the changes, a re-start was required. Thinking nothing of
it, I agreed to restart my computer. At the windows log in screen after
I selected my username, it tells me that in order to log on to windows,
I must first validate the edition of XP home that I am using. Well it's
been valid for the two years I've had it, and was given to me by my mom,
who was using it for a while before she passed it on to me. It's never
been reinstalled, just updated as per the "automatic updates" suggested
by microsoft.
When I select the "activate windows online now" option, it tells me
that I have no internet connection. even though the light on my router
is blinking as though I'm connected, as always. So I then tried the
"activate by phone" option. I follow all the steps and it tells me that
the copy of windows of windows cannot be verified at this time and that
I should contact the software vendor if it was a recent purchase. My
mom has no idea where the original microsoft install disc is, or if she
even still has it, and since the telephone support is all automated, I
can't actually get any more of an explanation.
If there is anybody who has taken the time to read this and can offer
any suggestions I would sincerely appreciate it because as of now I have
no access to my computer at all.
Thanks for reading,
Sarah
