Re: Acronis Teamed Up with Western Digital

Thanks to all for your reply.

I tried it on my home PC last night. It installed just fine (I have WD HD).
I was able to run it and I tried to clone the whole internal WD hard drive
to an external USB hard drive (Seagate). My external USB HD is already NTFS
formatted and has some files stored in it.

Cloning won't continue unless I choose to "delete and recreate partition" on
the destination (external) HD. I don't want to lose data on that HD so I
stopped right there.

I've used older versions of Ghost. It's very easy to clone the whole HD,
partitions, etc. Acronis is a little different to me.

How exactly do I clone the entire HD onto an external USB HD? What I'd like
to do is to create a clone image of the whole internal HD (or just 1
partition -- for example: D volume) onto an external USB HD. The result
would be 1 gigantic (GB) image file on my USB HD.

I just found out a few minutes ago that we can get a free Acronis True
Image disk imaging software from Western Digital. Here's the link:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&type=download&wdc_lang=en

I'm wondering if anyone here has used this particular Acronis TI software
with their XP/Vista. I have some questions for those who have tried it:

- Is there any limitations (eg: can only clone WD hard disks but not
other brands)?
- Does it work with external USB or Firewire HDs?
- Can we create a clone image (ie: create an image file) onto an external
HD?

A few facts about the WD version of TrueImage!

1. It is an older version (ver 11, build 8,311). The current version is
TrueImage Home 2009.

2. Regardless, it does work with Windows 7. I just created/restored an
image to test same.

3. It is about 30-40% slower than TrueImage 2009 on restore (after
reboot to do so).

4. The reboot for restore went flawlessly.

5. It can not read/verify an image created using TrueImage Home 2009.
This is to be expected.

All in all, if you have a Western Digital hard drive installed in your
computer this offer is very nice.
