Motherboard - Asus P5N-D
CPU - QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2400 MHz (9 x 267)
Memory - 8 Gb (3.326 Gb in XP)
Video - PNY GeForce 9800 GT (512)
Tri-boot XP Pro SP3, Vista Home Premium x64 SP1, Windows 7 RC x64
I recently bought an HP Scanjet G4050 scanner since HP doesn't and doesn't
plan to provide drivers for Vista or Win 7 for my old faithful Scanjet
6200C. The provided software is terrible and the purchase was a mistake.
But now I'm stuck with it and I'm having an XP specific problem. When I
click to preview a picture, the preview window doesn't come up for anywhere
between 35 seconds and over 2 minutes. This happens both directly from the
HP scanning software (HP Solution Center) or doing a Twain acquire from
within an application. In Vista or Windows 7 the scan starts immediately
except for the initial "warming up the lamp" scan on the first scan.
What I've tried in XP so far:
(1) Safe Mode (won't work at all in Safe Mode)
(2) Turned off everything in startup including AntiVirus
(3) Created a new user account and tried it there.
(4) Uninstalled, reinstalled - have latest & greatest drivers
(5) Disconnected all my other USB devices
All of these actions did not make a bit of difference.
In the 35 sec - 2 minute wait period anything else I try to do in Windows
is slowed to a crawl even though system idle process stays at 99%.
I spent over two hours with a tech in HP Chat support this morning. He
didn't have a clue. He spent half that time trying to convince me that I
had the resolution set too high (300) which of course has nothing to do
with the preview scan.
Last, but not least, I hooked the scanner up to one of my lesser computers
which runs an AMD Sempron 2300+ (1.58Ghz) and XP Pro. It worked fine on
that one.
Does anyone have any ideas about what else I might try?
Thanks.
