SpinRite is a hard drive tool that works. There's lots to
read at the link below. It's mainly marketed for data
recovery, but I think it's best for repairing drives. It
is an amazing piece of work. It's worth the 90 bucks.

I've got a friend's Toshiba laptop. It wouldn't boot, but kept retrying on
failure. I figured out how to prevent that. He says there are no important
files on the HDD. Stop error '0xED'. The laptop has Windows XP Pro(no way to
figure out which SP right now). I used a Windows XP HE upgrade CD to get to
the Recovery Console, and executed 'chkdsk /r'. After a couple of hours, it
is stuck at 59% complete. I am guessing the HDD is thrashed. Any
repercussions if I pull the plug on it while it is still running 'chkdsk
/r'?
