I don't have the knowledge to help you with this problem, but hopefully
someone will come by. These microsoft.public newsgroups are not staffed by
Microsoft. Answers come from people around the world who like to help
others. Sometimes you get a perfect answer immediately and sometimes you
never get a satisfactory answer. Be patient.

Hello!!
I have installed Windows XP Pro on my desktop PC.
I have downloaded all the necessary updates, but i still have a problem,
which is:
I cannot put my PC in a "Stand By" or "Hibernate" state...
Whenever I click START > TURN OFF COMPUTER > The STAND BY button is OFF. I
cannot use it. It's not working...
Please advise how can I let it work properly.
Thanks!

Hibernate mode.
Hibernate, has it's benefits but also you should consider that, unlike
'Suspend
mode', with hibernate you will loose any "dial-up" connections whereas
with standby,
it may not be necessary to re-connect.
Also, hibernate takes a wee bit longer to go into than standby mode.
There *are* benefits to Hibernate over standby mode, that you should also
consider;
If your computer accidentally becomes disconnected from the power
supply - nothing is
lost - and when re-connected, the PC will resume out of hibernation as if
nothing had
happened.
However, in standby mode, you will loose ALL unsaved data you were
working on,
including any changed Windows settings and the Desktop state, if the
power goes out.
All in all - suspend is risky (if the power supply is at all at risk) but
quick and
you retain network connections.
Hibernate is safer, as the working 'state' was saved to disk (rather than
to
power-dependent, volatile RAM) but you may have to re-establish network
connections
that were lost.
