Re: Delete Desktop Icons

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

As a result of the many replies in this Thread, I no longer have a Registry
Cleaner installed. Also, by coincidence, I found that my ISP has a totally
free, new & improved (no more Norton connection) AntiVirus/AntiSpyware
program, so that is installed & The Shield has been cleanly uninstalled.
Also I have done everything humanly possible to follow every step
recommended to get rid of the irritant folder on my Desktop.
At this time, my computer & all my programs run smoothly & problem free.
Actually faster & Start Ups are faster. But the irritant folder still exists.
This irritant is so tiny that I can continue to live with it, & feel that we
should all get on with our lives.
So I thank everybody for their interest & contributions, & I'm ending the
Thread now.

I went to the Registry & Deleted the 'Display/Name' reference to "The Shield
2006 Professional", then restarted my computer. True enough, 'Add/Remove'
programs no longer has any references to 'The Shield' programs. But - still I
can't Delete the nuisance folder.

In the Registry section there were some other references to The Shield -
should I go back to the Registry & Delete them too?

I tried this but found nothing that I could relate to The Shield. There is
just 7 long numeric/alpha keys.

I have one old Desktop Folder I can't Delete. It is for 'The Shield
Antivurus 2006' which was uninstalled & replaced more than two years ago.
It is not a big deal - just a nuisance & frustration. How can I get rid of
it?

Try:

Start>Run>regedit [enter]

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current
Version>Explorer>Desktop>Name Space

See if there is an entry for The Shield. If yes, delete it.

Would you like to:

Remove all traces of The Shield 2006 Professional program from your
system?

It seems that in addition to your desktop presence, it is also in Add/
Remove Programs (not mentioned before)

It would not be hard to just remove the folder from the desktop, but
if it still in Add/Remove and should not be, that also needs to be
fixed, yes?

This is sort of a moving target - with this The Shield Deluxe 2008
revelation by Daave.

I don't know if you have The Shield Deluxe 2008 installed or not, so
things may be mixed up now, but you can always reinstall 2008 if you
need to. Read all this first to see if it makes sense.

Backup your registry with this popular tool:

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

In your registry, navigate to here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

All the Add/Remove entries are here. Click on each entry on the left
between the curly braces {} to see the contents on the right.

Pay attention to the DisplayName fields and determine where SD is
installed (or thinks it is). DisplayName is what you see in Add/
Remove. If you delete the key (the {} entry on the left) from under
Uninstall, you will not see it in AR again.

SD was probably installed in C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield... or
something like that. If you do not have 2008, delete that folder. If
you have 2008, leave the folder.

At least now you know that the stuff will not show up in Add/Remove
anymore.

I would reboot now, check Add/Remove and make sure it looks okay.

Try to remove your desktop folder.

If it still won't go, try booting in Safe Mode to remove it.

If still no delete, use unlocker which you can download from here:

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Install it, right click the folder, check for locks and make the right
choice.

See how this works for you. If not, we can keep going.

I suggested URUNT already:)

Do you mean you deleted the entire registry key (everything between
the curly braces} under Uninstall that contained the DisplayName that
shows up in Add/Remove programs. You don't just delete the
DisplayName value on the right - you delete the entire key from the
left which deletes it and everything under it.

What registry section are you talking about?

Do a Windows Search for: desktop. Open each "desktop" folder and
delete the offending folder using one of the variety of methods
presented. If you can't delete it, see if you can rename it.
