Re: Windows Explorer Search tries to contact Microsoft

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

John

Could it be the Windows Error Reporting service trying to send a report from Event Viewer to Microsoft? Have you checked Event viewer?

Hope this helps.

I'll try this again. I tried posting a similar message earlier, but it
didn't propagate.

I'm using XP Home SP3 fully updated with all security patches etc.
Whenever I try to use Search within Windows Explorer (note that I did
NOT say INTERNET Explorer, I said WINDOWS Explorer!), my firewall pops
up the following alert:

"'Windows Explorer' from your computer wants to connect to
65.55.11.179, port 80"

I did a WHOIS on that IP address and here are the results:

What *possible* reason could there be for Windows Explorer or Search
needing to contact any server, much less Microsoft itself, whatsoever?
Note that I was only trying to find a file on my hard drive.

TIA.
