I just installed XP on a computer, totally fresh install. I installed a USB

not connected. Any ideas here?

Try hooking up to the modem the usual way using your ethernet controller and
see if it will activate then. If it does, then you can go back to the USB
setup if you desire. If it still won't activate, do as "Andrew E" said and
phone activate.
Modem not available there. It is in a remote location 2 floors up from my
DSL and no wiring between the floors, hence a w/l Ethernet card.
If the modem is two floors away from the DSL line and no wiring exists
between them, how does the modem communicate with the DSL line? How are you
using the DSL line without the modem attached to it? Get another modem and
attach to your DSL line, then attach the computer to it with an ethernet cord.
As far as the phone is concerned, been there, done that. They gave me such.
a hassle last time I ended up having to fight to get the w/l connection
working and do the internet route.
