Re: All shortcuts open the same program

Hi.

I suspect I have associated .exe files with uptodate.exe. That fix didn't
work - got an error message about a file being open.

I did a system restore which has fixed things. Luckily we store all of our
data on an external server...

Thanks.

I recently updated a medical app called UptoDate. The old icon no longer
launched the app so I changed the properties of the shortcut so that it
points to the correct app.

Now UptoDate launches when I double-click on ANY start menu shortcut,
any desktop icon, any quick launch icon AND any executable file in My
Programs. UptoDate is also launched if I enter any executable file in
Start, run. I'm not able to fire up the DOS prompt because UptoDate
starts.

I have uninstalled UptoDate and I now get "File not found" if I launch
an app.

If I log in as another user this problem does not occur.

I would like to avoid trashing the entire user account if possible.

If I need to trash the user account what is the best procedure? I need
to reinstate the same user name because we're running a network.

I was thinking of using System Restore but would like to avoid this if
possible.

This is a very strange problem and I'm completely perplexed about this
one.

You probably changed the association for .lnk files, instead of the
Properties of the shortcut. System Restore is the best answer, but try
the .lnk association fix here:

Fix File Associations.

How exactly you'll do this, I'm not sure; you may need to start the
necessary programs by double-clicking their executables, to stay away
from the .lnk files.
