Well, I finally found out what the Icon is all about, and it was
looking me in the face all the time! There is even a description of what
it does (but no explanation of how it should be used)in the manual. I am
embarrassed to say that in my enthusiasm with a new toy, I did not
What is the rest of this story? :o)

Thanks for your interest Roy. This thread started off trying to identify an icon I had in the Notification area of the taskbar . After a lot of suggestions and investigation I found the origin myself so the original intent was fulfilled. In the course of the evaluation, I found a file which created some interest and the thought was that it could be a virus..
The computer is a Works reconditioned unit and is still in guarantee, so I will be taking it into the workshop seeing that I was unable to stop the various error screens from appearing. Incidentally I did do a scan for Malware and a virus scan but they did not show anything.

Since you call this pc a "new toy" does that imply that it is a brand
new pc, or one that you bought used?
If it means a brand new pc, then I would be talking with the
manufacturer's tech support about the errors, not here in this
newsgroup. (Sorry no offense intended to the other wonderful and
helpful people who post here...) Since the unit is still under
warranty, that would be my first choice since it's possible the errors
are hardware related and not software.
If it means used, then I would strongly recommend that you format the
drive and reinstall Windows using the recovery software. When buying
used equipment, you have no idea of what condition the os is in, or what
viruses or malware may be on the pc.
thoroughly read the manual or even look hard at the keyboard. The 'F8'
key on the keyboard, in combination with the Fn key displays the Icon on
the screen. When I looked at the combination of keystrokes in the
manual, I discovered that this combination of keys is described as
'Silent mode', which is explained as "Pressing Fn + F8 can activate the
intelligent control of the CPU clock and voltage, adjusting fan noise
effectively and extending battery power." There are no hints on using
the 'Silent mode' but I assume that it is just that, a way to reduce
power usage by adjusting the fan speed.
I am concerned about the possibility that RTHDLL may be a virus from
what Brian A and Twayne have said - and the fact that I have been unable
to find the origin of the information which persuaded me that it was a
legitimate file! Since I got the computer I have had a constant run of
errors which was why I wanted to find the origin of the Icon.
I have run the online McAfee virus scan and Ad-Aware, both gave the
computer a clean bill of health. I will need to install more programs to
do more, unless there are more on-line scans I could try.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread...
