Hmm! This can also be virus related.

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:

Something has added a line to it which should not be there.
Edit it with NotePad. It should contain - apart from many comment lines
starting REM - just
REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
REM Install network redirector (load before dosx.exe)
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
REM Install DPMI support
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx
And possible SET or PATH lines:
Remove anything else by turning it into a comment, adding REM and a
space as shown in the above. And please note what they were and report
back - this is happening a lot and I would like to find out *what* has
got added.
Please provide feedback if you can. It would be greatly appreciated and
will help others.

Thanks I've already done both of these and checked after reboot for deletion, which
there was none, but still getting same errors, looks like a full restore for me

"RB" <NoMail@NoSpam> wrote in message news:h3e0o70ao6@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxI cannot install app, setup exits with error and when I track
down the error at Microsoft I get this,
"corrupt 16-bit subsystem" . Can this be fixed or am I going
to have to completely restore my machine ?
