Turn Off computer not working

I just reformatted and reinstalled WindowsXP and all seemed well until I
tried to turn off the computer. It does not work.

I tried pushing the power button on the case. That does nothing either.

I went to Desktop>Properties>Display Properties>Screen Saver>Advanced>Power
Buttons and in the Power Buttons box, Shut Down was selected.

The only way to shut down seems to be to unplug the power cord.

Any suggestions.
