Tim, When I press the sleep button on the keyboard the monitor says that the
system is going into standby and then the screen turns off but the PC is
still running. Before this, the PC fans etc would shut down too and all went
quiet.
I have already tried the other alternative you mentioned but it didn't solve
the problem. As mentioned in the previous posting, the sleep key must be
working but it still doesn't shut off the tower.
I have another XP PC and have checked all the settings against this one,
they are all the same and that one is working OK. What could have changed to
prevent it going to sleep.

How do you know it is just turning the monitor off and not going
into standby mode?
What are the symptoms that make you believe this is what is happening?
If you are sure, and you have checked that it does indeed specify 'Stand
by ' in the box marked 'When I press the sleep button on my computer'
under the 'Advanced' tab on the 'Power Options' control panel. Then, I
would deliberately set this option to 'Shut down' then use the button to
shut your computer off. Then, re-start your computer and set the option
*back* to 'Stand by'.
This will probably clear what is happening, by defining it to something
else and then setting it back again.
But, make sure that you have the right button defined; i.e. the
'Sleep' button and not the 'Power' button!

Hi Guys,
When I press the sleep button on the keyboard only the screen goes
into
standby mode, the PC no longer does. I've checked in the Power Options
panel
and everything is the same as before. I've read through the problems
others
are having with standby mode but can't see my problem there. Any
ideas?
Cheers.
