You're trying to run Unix software on Windows?
ReflectionX and Hummingbird are common X-Server applications (and
neither of them are free); i.e., they let you remotely access the UNIX
host on which are installed UNIX applications that you are trying to
run. Cygwin/X (http://x.cygwin.com/) runs on windows and provides an
X-server client (i.e., lets you connect to the remote UNIX host). What
you are doing is moving the X-Server from the UNIX host to your Windows
host and then windowing your UNIX applications inside the local
X-Server.
I am trying to install a program called SNNS (Stuttgart Neural Network
Simulator)
http://www.ra.cs.uni-tuebingen.de/SNNS/
Here is some information about the version I want to install (the first part
of the first sentence seems to be a mistake):
"SNNSv4.2 for Windows is a SNNSv4.2 version, compiled for Windows platforms.
Since it has been originaly developed for Unix platforms, this port still
relies on the X-Windows graphical system. It includes only the executables,
the X11 dynamic link librarays and examples. Source code is available in an
extra distribution.
In order to run SNNSv4.2 on Windows you must install an X-Server,
a program that interprets the SNNS' graphic commands and controls the
display accordingly. A demo X-Server can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-tuebingen.de/pub/SNNS/Windows/Executables/X-Server/
For more information about X-Windows, including hyperlinks to other
X-Servers, you can refer to, for example:
http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Forum/6298/
The only problem is that both of the links they gave don't work. I think the
software is kind of old. Now can you give me a recommendation of a website
where I can get a free X-Server?
I did but forgot to note that it is free. See my prior reply.
Hint: Cyg....
In order of preference, I like Hummingbird/X first because it is the
most compatible across the largest number of *NIX platforms.
Reflection/X is next due to it better usability features. Cygwin/X is
last but it has the advantage of being free.
The programs you want to use are apparently recompiled to run under
Windows but without any GUI handling. They are using X-Server windowing
calls so an X-server program has to provide that for them. I haven't
tried the Linux-in-a-VM solution to use its X-Server but the Cyg
solution should work as it runs locally on your Windows host.
The link that I found on their web site for Windows downloads led me to:
http://www.ra.cs.uni-tuebingen.de/downloads/SNNS/Executables/Windows/X-Server/
From their install.txt file, it looks like they get the xdemo programfrom http://www.starnet.com. I'm guessing it's this one (a 30-day trial
version):
http://www.starnet.com/products/xwin32/download.php
