XP cannot run without a pagefile. Even if you turn it off, XP will
still create one to use for dumps etc.; it's by design.
The pagefile won't get used unless you need it beyond that. So set
one up and if you're not sure, get a free pagefile monitor and watch it
to see if it gets used. Unless you're doing some pretty elegant
computing like huge graphics or video rendering/editing, it won't get
used. But if you are doing that, even with your 4 Gig (actually less),
you're still going to need a pagefile. Just set it to system managed
size and forget it. Then grab a free monitor and watch the pagefile.
E.g. mine stays right around 150 - 200 Meg at all times; unless I do
video work. You simply can't fit a full hour's video file into 3.x Gig
of RAM; no way.
