You are confused because you don't know what you are talking about. There is nothing wrong with his addresses. The routers IP address is not set in stone and can be whatever you set it to be. Why you think something is wrong with it just shows your inexperience on this subject.

"robgraham" <rttgrahamwow@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:-t6dne1SlsJ0Ia3XnZ2dnUVZ8iGdnZ2d@xxxxxxxxx*** 255.255.255.0 is correct. What about the subnet mask? It's defaulting to 255.255.255.0.: You open a command prompt and type this command:ping 192.168.1.254 -tI'm getting Destination host unreachable when all devices are connected. If I remove them there's no difference.
You now disconnect one device from your network after the other until the ping command reports a timeout.
Previously you claimed that your IP addresses are what they should be. I asked you what made you think so but you did not respond. I'd like to hear your opinion.
In the meantime I suggest you configure your IP addresses manually as follows. The addresses are based on your previous report:
IP address: 192.168.1.66
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.64
DNS Server: 192.168.1.64
In other words, you do NOT use DHCP. After setting these addresses, report what you get when you run these commands:
ping 209.85.129.99
ping www.google.com
I've got a message on both computers that there's an IP address conflict.*** Changing the Default Gateway address will not generate
*** this type of error message. Set your IP address to 192.168.1.10,
*** then post this:
*** The output from the two above ping commands.
*** The output from the command ipconfig /all
Incidentally, I don't necessarily think that my IP addresses are correct.*** Glad to hear it - I was wondering why you said so.
Also, I wonder whether I may have some malware or virus on board. Problem is, without connectivity to the Internet I can't download up-to-date definitions*** It's a possibility.
Results
ping 209.85.129.99 Request timed out
ping www.google.com Ping request could not find host www.google.com
ipconfig /all
DHCP enabled: No
IP address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.64
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.64
You asked me to set the IP address and I've used the address you last gave me, which is not the same as the one gave before. Also, I set the Default Gateway to what you told me before because you didn't mention it last time.
Can you ping 192.168.1.64?
What do you see when you open your browser (e.g. IE7) and type *exactly* this address: 192.168.1.64
1. Request timed out
2. Address not valid
OK. In an earlier post you claimed that your router's IP address was 192.168.1.64. There are now three possibilities:
a) Your claim is incorrect, or
b) The link between your PC and the router is broken, or
c) The router is defective.
I've now checked again using my desktop and the IP of the router appears to be 192.168.1.66 (not 64). If I check using the laptop I find that it is 192.168.1.10. Is this difference material?
The problem is that I should have two links between the PC and the route - one via an Ethernet cable and the other wirelessly. The latter I use if I'm close enough, but generally I'm not so I use a Belkin Powerline adaptor connected at one end via an Ethernet cable to the laptop. Neither are working and the message I get from both of them is that there is no or limited connectivity.
Of course, the router *may* be defective, but it does work for the desktop.
I'm getting a little frustrated with this thread because of the repeated posting of incorrect information, unanswered questions and explicit claims that you subsequently withdraw. If you find that this whole issue is above your head (and there is no shame in admitting it) then you should ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you. He would know what to look for.
You must now backtrack *carefully* and repeat the tests that I previously posted. The most recent one was:
Can you ping 192.168.1.66?
What do you see when you open your browser (e.g. IE7) and type *exactly* this address: 192.168.1.66
