I have two computers, both running WinXP SP3. On my old one, I've been
using Dell Image Expert to download photos from my Canon camera, which
I then copy to my other computer (as a kind of backup). Each time I
download more photos, Dell continues the numbering of the JPGs, using
the format IMG_111.JPG.

Today, for the first time, I tried downloading photos directly to my
new computer, which doesn't have the Dell program on it. Using
Microsoft Office Picture Manager, I could "name" the images (so
presumably I can use the same system Dell does). However, the images
are numbered from the beginning. Is there a way I can continue the
numbering--say, by stating the first number and then asking for
consecutive numbering from that point on? I checked the Help file but
didn't see anything obvious. I'm hoping there's a general rule for
consecutive numbering of photos from a certain point--one that would
work with any of the photo programs.

Thank you!

As Dave said, the continuous numbering is usually handled by the
camera (one exception is a Fuji FinePix S602Z I own). Is it possible
for you to install the Dell Image Expert software on your new
computer? That way you'd be using a program you are already familiar
with to download the pictures.

Just a thought,
SC Tom

Thank you, Tom! I checked with Dell, and they claim I'd have to buy the
program for my new computer, since it doesn't come with it.

What model Canon camera is it? I have a PowerShot SD700IS, and under
Menu, Tools (looks like a wrench and hammer), there's a setting for File
Numbering. The choices are Auto Reset and Continuous. I have mine set to
Continuous and after I offload my pix, the next picture I take continues
the numbering from the last one I offloaded. Maybe yours is similar?

SC Tom

Thank you, Tom! I think the camera's numbering has nothing to do with the
numbering of the downloaded photos. But you've convinced me that I should
look at the software that came with the camera. I'll bet it allows
continuous numbering--and I could install it on both computers.

As Sunny replied, that was the point I was trying to get across- no matter
where I download my pictures, whether it's my notebook or home PC, the
pictures will always have a different sequential number than anything I've
already saved. Like Sunny, I don't use any software; I just plug in the
SD card on my notebook, or attach the camera with the USB cable to my home
PC and save them all. I do a lot of tennis events, so a lot of pictures
are taken every day. At the end of each day or two, I download the
pictures to a folder with the event name, such as My Documents\My
Pictures\Family Circle Cup 2009. If the last picture I off-loaded was
DSCF2460.JPG, the next picture taken will automatically be DSCF2461.JPG
whether there are any pictures on the camera or not. I have never used any
camera software for any camera I've owned; it just doesn't seem necessary.
The pictures are already pre-numbered, and I don't need to waste time
messing with it.

Oops...I clicked Send before writing anything. I apologize! Good to know
that I can download without a program using either the cable or the card. I
guess what I should do is not choose a program to get the photos and instead
use the Copy command. I'll check it out the next time I have photos to
download.

Thank you!

Jo-Anne
