...[WinXP] SP2 upgraded IE5 to IE6.
Nope. IE6 has always been thee IE version in any flavor of WinXP.
Adobe Reader v9.1.1 is fully compatible with both IE7 and IE8...if they're install properly and the machine is not hijackware-infected.

Hi! Does IE7 interfere with Adobe Reader 9, or vice versa?
I uninstalled IE7, back to IE6, and things are working again. If I
install IE8, will my problems start up again?
I just upgraded to WinXP Home last week, after 8 or 9 years on
win98SE. I have both now.
I started with the orlginal XP CD and then installed SP2 from a CD I
had bought. SP2 upgraded IE5 to IE6. I dl'd and installed SP3.
Everything went smoothly. I dl'd Adobe Reader 9 and installed it, and
it worked.
Then I dl'd IE7 and installed it, and right after that, or maybe after
I rebooted, XP started crashing over and over, at various places. It
usually crashed right after it started, and when I hadn't even started
either IE or Adobe. Sometimes I couldn't get it to start, and I
couldn't get it to start in Safe Mode either. I would get an all
black screen with Safe Mode written in each corner, and one line of a
file name or some other text at the top.
Finally I was able to get XP to run long enough to uninstall IE7 back
to 6 and everything is ok now.
Thanks for any help you may give.
