Hello everyone,

I've installed Easy CD Creator 3.5c on a WinXP SP3 machine. I
wanted to test if its labels and CDs printing features would work
(and if the program would run). I was warned that this version was
incompatible with this version of Windows but I had the option to
continue the installation, so I did.

It is a test I am doing on a machine that I don't use to burn CDs,
so I knew what I was doing and wanted to see what would happen.

I set the shortcut in Win95 compatibility mode after the
installation. The program runs and the features I need also work
but the result of this installation was that the WinXP CD burning
drivers were replaced by older incompatible versions and Windows
deactivated CD burning capability on this machine on reboot.

This machine is a Celeron 500 that I plan to send to recycle soon.

I really like the ease of use of this version of EZ CD Creator to
create labels and print on CDs, I have a lot of templates and files
that were created under WinME that I want to be able to use. I
don't mind not being able to burn CDs with this program.

My question is, if I install this program on my P4 (XP Home SP3),
is there a way that I can restore the CD burning drivers with
current ones when EZ CD Creator will destroy CD burning capability,
maybe by reinstalling Nero Express or Windows Media Player after
installing EZ CD 3.

I could try it but I prefer to ask before because I don't want to
destroy the burning capability of my P4 and not being able to
restore it.

Anyone knows which files constitute the CD burning driver for WinXP
so I could copy them in a temp folder and put them back after the
installation, (and registry entries)?

1. You could write with what you have but 3.5c will only burn 650
MB max. You'd have to install ASPI, see
http://aspi.radified.com/
That might fix XP burning too, don't know, don't use it.

I did a few test, updated Windows Media Player, and the only
"problem" is a message when Windows boot that it did not load some
drivers that could render Windows unstable and "CD burning software"
would not work, I realise now that only EZ CD Creator 3.5 doesn't
burn CDs.

Possibly (probably) the drivers not loaded are for DirectCD which is
Adaptec's packet
writing (drag & drop) program. IIRC, it was normally installed at the
same time as EZCD; I don't recall if one could opt out but probably so
since it is a totally separate program.

In order for it to function as was intended, it has to sort of wiggle
down into the OS; in the case of XP, that would replace XP's native
ability. DirectCD can be disabled vis msconfig or it can simply be
uninstalled. ___________

3. You could get an honest-to-gosh labeling program.

Any suggestions for a free labelling program?

That isn't something I've used much. When I have, I've used CDLabel -
not free but inexpensive - or InterCover 2.50 (now free I think).

With that version of EZCD, Direct CD came on a separate disk. What I have
is Easy CD Creator Deluxe - boxed-retail.

I'm not sure what the incompatibility is, I installed the latest ASPI
layer from Adaptec and I still get the error message when Windows boot,
since it does not affect other programs to burn CDs, I can live with it.

The program runs in Win95 compatibility mode, it just doesn't see the
burner.

I will install EZCD it on my P4 for the printing features and put my
Celeron 500 (double boot ME-XP) to rest.

Thanks for your suggetions

Problem solved (sort of...)
