Hi all,
I've tried this with no luck.
i have a dell with only usb (no ps2) ports. When i boot the computer i can use keyboard and mouse in the bios screens, I can also use the keyboard and mouse when booting from the xp cd. When i boot windows from the computers main partition (safe mode, all variants) i have no mouse or keyboard. I cannot log into the computer to do anything and the computer was sent to me due to a problem with the network card (and i dont have any network on the computer of course).
I've tried using the registry in the system32\repair as pegasus refered to earlier.
I've flashed the bios to the newest
I've tried 2 usb keyboards as well as a usb-ps2 adapter with yet another ps2 keyboard.
I've tried running repair console from the cd and ensuring all hidusb related services i know were set to autostart.
I've run a checkdisk and repaired all issues with the filesystem.
None of these things have corrected the issue.
My next step is a parallel install of windows.

Thanks for the response.
At first glance the kb article you refer to is for a machine which cannot
boot. This isnt the case for me. The machine boots fine and comes to the
login screen (in regular boot mode, and safe mode). Its only there where
i have the problem that no keyboard or mouse works, so i'm unable to
login.
As in my first post, I recieved this computer which was completley working
except network, but i do not have the mouse and keyboard the owner uses
which i imagine could be an issue. He's on vacation and gone for the rest
of this and next week so i cant get my hands on the keyboard... etc they
used. I have a feeling that if this machine didnt have different users
and passwords, and went directly to the desktop, i would see the new
hardware found wizard for my keyboard.
I wont discard the suggestion, but is there any way of being sure this is
actually the problem before going though the steps?
If you do it properly then my suggestion is fully reversible:
1. You take a backup of the current System registry file.
2. You replace it with a recent System registry file from the System Volume
Information folder.
3. If this does not fix the problem then you restore the System registry
file from the backup you created.
You should, of course, discuss the issue with the owner before going ahead.
