Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the Non/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit .

Run disk clean up then this command:
sfc /scannow

If you still have no joy try to send us the error messages from the event
viewer.
- Have a look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X) that can shed some
light and post it back in your next post by performing the following:
Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear with my first question...

I have run every software I can find for malaware and viruses

The "event" triggers a closure of windows firewall. I don't use this
firewall, I use norton. But, I have found that when this "event" occurs,
along with losing my sound features, if I attempt to open the windows
firewall, I don't get the option of turning it on or not....I get a box that
says " Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated
service is not running. Do you want to Start the Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) servoce?"If I click yes, I get "Windows cannot start
the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service.

If i attempt to play music with Windows Media Player, I get "Windows Media
Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound
device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it
might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

If I go to control panel and then sounds and audio devices, click on audio
and I see under default device..no playback devices..under sound
recording..no recording devices and under midi music playback..no midi
playback devices.

When I reboot my computer this all goes away. I can go to Media player and
start music and it will play all day...never stop. If I am not using media
player, that is when I get the message that the generic host process is
having a problem and needs to shut down. That message can come after an hour
or five hours, I cannot find a pattern to that...it just shuts down....

Do you use wireless on this machine? Try to update your Wireless card or use
the WZC to manage your wireless rather than using the Wireless card/Adapter
wireless utility or just use the Wireless manufacutrer wireless utiltiy and
disable Windows Zero Configuration.

This quartz.dll refer to a windows Media 11 and you can have trrouble with
that if the following true:
1- outdated/corrupt Video Card driver. So, try to yupdate your Video card to
the latest Video driver form the Video card manufacturer website.
2- Your video hardware
acceleration are high and you can try to Turn it down a bit and see if the
problem will go away.

3- Corrupt/damaged Media 11 installation which less likely in your case!
