Re: How to install network printer

Would like to access a Canon i9900 printer from any where on my LAN.

The LAN has a desktop computer connected to a gateway device with etho
cable, and three notebooks connected via 802.111G wireless protocol. The
computers are running either XP or Vista. The printer is connected to the
desktop computer via USB 2.0.

Would like to install the printer as a network device. And do not want
software used to operate the printer to interfer with other applications
such as OCR. Therefore I would appreciate if someone would tell me what
files Windows XP and Vista look for, and the locations where these files
are normallly found.

I don't understand why you are concerned about files in XP and Vista. Making
the Canon a true network printer should not interfere with your OCR
software.

To change your Canon printer to a network printer, connect it to the router
via ethernet - assuming of course that this printer has an ethernet card
built in. Your router will assign it an IP address. Refer to your Canon
manual to see how to print out a configuration page showing what IP address
it pulled. Then access the printer's configuration utility by opening a
browser and going to the printer address. Some printers allow you to enter
TCP/IP settings manually from a console on the printer. In either case,
give the printer a static IP address outside of the router's DHCP range.

Then go to each computer and change the port for the printer to a standard
TCP/IP port with the correct IP address. Some printer mftrs. like HP need
you to put in the installation CD again to "add a printer". I don't know
what Canon's requirements are in this regard but the manual should tell
you. If you haven't already installed the drivers on the other computers
then do so, installing as a network printer.
