he had no sound,was advised to find out sound card manufacture
and download drivers .
After much messing about driver download was not possible

between Microsoft and Phillips and drivers were not available for the
download ,but built into Vista and Vista should assign them.
only one card in pci slot in computer ,appears to be video/sound and
maybe other things all on one card..
We remover card,restarted comp without card installed,waited 5 mins,
shut down comp,refited card in hope that Vista would detect in as
new hardware found and assign drivers but it did not.
After Google it appears to be a very common Problem with Vista losing
sound and not easy to fix.
Prior to doing a complete reinstall of Vista we tried a Vista repair disc
which appeared to be doing something then after a while told it was done
and to reboot computer ,however it was not repaired and just just kept
going round in circles and got nowhere.
Has been sorted now by going into the Bios and changing two items
that were disabled (can't remember what now) saved, come out of Bios,
Vista booted up and sound was working fine.
So the real reason for my visits this time ( just thought I'd try to explain above as to this Q)
Can doing a Vista repair OR full reinstall change settings in the Bios ??.

Allthough many modern motherboards allow software to update the BIOS, I don't think Vista does this.
I expect you accidently disabled the BIOS sound setting (or maybe your BIOS disabled it when it coundn't find the hardware, hard to say.)

I thought the only way things changed in Bios was that you had to do it and save
new settings OR you got a virus.
