stuck in Safe mode screen


My computer is not starting in any mode. There was an update to be
installed on shutdown and the power went off. I tried to shut the
computer down because my ups gives a backup of 20 secs only, and the
computer shut off while the update was installing. This happened again a
second time. It is showing the safe mode screen now, and none of the
options are working. I tried safe mode, booting normally, and last known
good configuration, but it always comes back to the same screen.

Does anyone know how i can fix this. Its most likely due to the update
which has messed up something somewhere.
