Re: no dns name

well IP numbers wise, it points to my ISP, it's just the DNS name itself is
blank, I find this confusing, as it's blank when it works, and blank when
it's not working, so could this be a problem within windows, as it appears to
be sporadic, works for a week or so, then goes belly up for a day or so, then
it works, regular DSL didn't do this.
just the ADSL

Normally the Gateway and Primary DNS server assignments point to
your Broadband Access point.

Not specifically to address your issue, but you can use a free service
called OpenDNS that provides alternate/possibly better service Domain
Name System than your ISP offers.
Info and instructions at OpenDNS website: http://www.opendns.com/
The OpenDNS servers are:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Here's the latest, I regained internet connection unknown as to what if
anything changed, but when I do ipconfig the dns name is blank, is this
expected? I would have thought I'd have something in there, not just
blank.

That program won't help, if you can't ping external IP addresses.. I
missed that detail. Sorry

I did that also, set each pc to a static IP address supplied by them,
no dice.
and no I can't ping any external ip address, all I get is a time out.
I think there is a problem with the modem, I may exchange it for a
different
one.

I have a problem with Xp pro, been happening since my ISP switched
to ADSL
modems, I lose the DNS name within my lan connection, I can talk to
the
modem, and that is it. it has worked fine all last week with no
problems,
I
came home from work last night no internet, and this morning still
no joy,
my
ISP can talk to the modem, I can't ping anything using the Cmd
Screen.
I've
tried flushing the ipconfig and renewing, no joy. my ISP is also
puzzled,
they are esculating it, has anybody some ideas? i use ie6 and
Firefox,
neither works, no other routers are between my pc and modem and yes
the
ADSL
can act as a firewall, but that's disabled, so is KIS Kaspersky
internet
security in fact i uninstalled it just as a test, no change.
This has been an ongoing problem, I'm sure it's my ISP they are
just as
sure, it's not. I'm getting fed up. with the on/off access to the
internet.
I had an ADSL modem that suffered from the same problem: It would
not
resolve names by itself. I fixed the problem by asking my ISP to
give me the
IP address of his DNS server, then manually setting the DNS address
of each
PC to this value.

Can you ping an external IP address, e.g. 72.14.221.104 (Google)?

Try this software download from a working machine:
