The hissing is there always, and no other sound, even when I lower the input.
the OS is Windows XP

very nasty noise. Keep the MIC volume low and disable MIC boost if it has
been enabled.
FYI ,Vista has automatic adjustment for input if too much noise is detected.

The microphone of a Logitech QuickCam 8.4 works fine in Skype for example.
But when I test it (WinXP), clickimg: Start/Control Panel/Sound and Audio
Devices/Voice/Default Device (camera)/Test hardware, the recording works
(i.e. the green column changes height)but playback only gives a strong
hissing sound (even when I lower recording and playback volume).
