AUTO ARRANGE. This causes chaos to my organisation, and rectifying is time
consuming and I wish I could elect to select ALIGN TO GRID as a PERMANENT
default setting for whenever I view my folder contents whether I have just
booted up or not - I realise this is similar to the other ICON query but the
answers seemed to go off on a goose chase and not provide a simple answer.
Please respond without using too much jargon!!

Windows Explorer should remember this setting but it has a lot of problems
and design missteps. One of those that bites many users is the built-in
limit of 400 directories for which it will remember display settings. It is
possible to increase this limit by editing the registry. Since I am
hesitant to explain to others how to use regedit I will simply recommend
that you do a search for the fix -- it is well documented at many websites.
maybe even MS explains the fix somewhere in their KB but their search is
not nearly so convenient and competent as Google so finding it there will
be more difficult.

TweakUI allow this to be changed quickly and easily. There is some
upper limit but I have not been able to ascertain what it is.
