Good reply. Tried re-installing the software without device plugged in, and then plug it in. Tried removing software and re-install and plug in, tried installing software with the device plugged in. It still wants to search for a driver and it is not on the cd or on the hard disk. The setup program installs the QuiltCad software, and does not ask you to install your device. The program can be used stand alone and you can transfer designs to other models with a thumb drive. I am still trying to contact their tech support for a program update or drivers.
Try this.
Download UVCView. The program was originally on the Microsoft
site, but is no longer available for download.

The screen will look similar to this. Plug in your USB
cable, and then look for a new entry here.

The info needed is idVendor and idProduct, otherwise known
as VID and PID.
There is an unofficial list of USB hardware, here.
http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids
As an example, you might see values like VID=067b and PID=2303.
The Prolific PL-2303 is a popular USB to serial chip used in
USB to serial cables. There are Prolific drivers floating
around in that case.

2303 PL2303 Serial Port
I would have expected support to be built into Windows, in the
form of a USB Communication Device Class (CDC) driver. Strange
why it just doesn't work when plugged in. If you look in the
reviews for some of the USB to serial cables here, some products
have reports of working without drivers, while others seem to
need a driver.

It will install the drivers, then when you plug the machine back in, they will be properly loaded.
and using it with QuiltCad softwate. Device detected as a RT232 device but
needs a driver. There are question marks under device manager. This is a USB
to RS232 interface. Tech video shows install with Vista and Vista auto
detects and installs a driver. It shows up under ports with device manager as
a com port. Tech support lacking badly. Install disk has a single setup.exe
file and no drivers saved on disk. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
