BSOD WINXPPRO WILL NOT LOAD

Hello, I have tried many different ways to get the system to boot again, but
it will not. The BSOD says the following "Stop c000128 (registry file
failure) The registry cannot load the hive (file)
\systemroot\system32\config\software or its log or alternate it is corrupt
absent or not writeable". When I put my XP pro disk into the system to use
the repair function, I found this to be interesting. I can make a backup
copy in DOS of "windows\system32\config\system" into a
"windows\tmp\system.bak" file, but interesting enough, when I try to copy
"windows\system32\config\software" into "windows\tmp\software.bak" it will
not let me and I get the following message.
"c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak [ENTER]
error.file cannot be copied". I suspect a "virus" might be present although
I only have portable USB drive or CD ROM drives available to me and no XPPro
startup disc was ever made (it is not my computer, it's my daughters). Where
do I go from here? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.
